Description

This is a like new Airman SST12 Automatic Watch that was taken on trade from a collector from Scandinavia for a Marathon watch.    This watch comes with an unuused Glycine brown leather strap as well as a hansome grey NATO with orange strap that gowa qith the dial/bezel.  Glycine has been producing timepieces since 1914, a testament to its ability to adapt to the modern world.  Perhaps best known for its 24-hour Airman tool watch, Glycine has recreated the vibe of one of its most iconic watches with the SST12 Automatic from the Viet Nam era aka “The Glycine Pumpkin”. While it may look busy, the dial’s throng of numerals, hands, and markers serve a very specific purpose. The watch is capable of tracking time in a whopping three different time zones. The first is your current time zone, indicated by the innermost markers. The independently operated GMT hand tracks the time in two separate time zones: one is shown on the inner bezel; the other is indicated by the bidirectional rotating bezel controlled by the crown at 2 o’clock.

Constructed with a stainless steel case and a sapphire crystal, the Airman SST12 Automatic watch is field ready—not to mention it’s water-resistant to an impressive 200 meters. It’s fitted with Glycine’s GL293 21-jewel movement, which has a power reserve of 42 hours. The strap is made from thick leather (or stainless steel) for a solid feel on the wrist. Pull the crown out to the first position and rotate it counterclockwise for the quickset date. Rotate it clockwise to adjust the GMT hand. Pull the crown out to the second position to set the time.

The original Glycine Pumpkin SST was named after the Boeing SST 2707 that was being developed for intercontinental supersonic flight in the late 1960s. Interestingly, Seattle’s NBA basketball team, formed in 1967, was named the Seattle SuperSonics (shortened to “Sonics”). The name was inspired by the Boeing SST contract awarded in that year.

That older version of the watch became very popular with American military pilots during the Viet Nam war who liked the 24 hour configuration and easy to read dial.

This watch is new old stock from 2014 (retailed in 2018) before the firm was purchased by Invicta.  It comes with the original box and papers.  These originally retailed for $2640!  It was manufactured from 2012 for only two years.
