WWII US Army Air Corps/ USN Military survival compass by Wittnauer
- Description
Wittnauer (Longines-Wittnauer) was given a contract to produce compasses for the U.S. military forces in 1941. Most Wittnauer compasses were produced that year. They were included as part of a survival kit for U.S. aviators, and were frequently said to be officers' compasses, though this was inaccurate. The compasses have nickel cases, featuring a spring-loaded cover with a glass crystal and a jewelled needle.
1941 U.S. military Wittnauer compasses are extremely collectible. They were made to last despite being over 70 years old.
A genuine Wittnauer compass is signed Wittnauer on the compass rose and is stamped U.S. on the front of the case.
This example has a small dent on the front cover....a testament to having been used but still in fine working condition. Just as they say, they were built to last!
Full Description
The Wittnauer company dates from 1890, when Albert Wittnauer immigrated to the U.S. from Switzerland and opened a watchmaking shop with his brothers. The U.S. Navy adopted the company’s precision timepieces for early aviation tests, and in 1941 (after merging with the Longines company in 1936), Wittnauer won a contract to produce pocket compasses for the military—mostly to be included in aircraft survival kits.
